BULLDOGS BATTLE IN TOP 25 NSIC MATCHUP BUT FALL TO WINONA STATE

Box Score Winona, Minn. – The No. 23 UMD Bulldogs traveled to the No. 9 Winona State Warriors. In what was a highly contested match, the Warriors would outlast the Bulldogs to win the match 1-3 (25-27, 25-22, 19-25, 17-25).
 
The first set would prove to be a battle. Teams would continue to trade points and neither team could pull ahead of the other. Throughout the set, neither team would take a lead larger than three points. Towards the end of the set, UMD would take a 23-21 advantage. The Warriors would battle back however and pull to a 23-23 tie. After scoring to take a 24-23 advantage, the Bulldogs would not be able to close out the Warriors as they would go on to score 3 of the next 5 points to win the set 25-27.
 
The second set would be much like the first set. Both teams would battle throughout the set, with neither team able to grab an advantage once again. Teams would battle to a 10-10 tie, when the Warriors would be able to gain a 11-14 lead. The Bulldogs would battle and grind back to a 20-20 tie. From there, the Bulldogs would score three straight points to gain a 23-20 advantage. The Bulldogs would be able to close out the Warriors this set and win 25-22.
 
With the match tied at 1-1, the third set would start much like the rest of the match. After teams were tied 6-6, Winona State was able to go on a 6-point run to take a 6-12 advantage. The Bulldogs were not out of it however as they were able to grind it out to tie it up at 16-16. Teams would continue to battle to a 18-18 tie before the Warriors would take over. They would go on to score 7 of 8 points to close out the set and win 19-25.
 
Teams would once again come out battling in the fourth set. Both teams would trade points to a 12-14 Warriors advantage. The Bulldogs would not be able to claw back in this one as Winona State would take control of the end of the set to close out the Bulldogs 17-25 and win the match 1-3.
 
 
The Bulldogs were led by Sophomore Outside Hitter Cianna Selbitschka who had 13 kills. Fifth year Kate Berg added 12 kills for UMD. Sophomore Maddi Kealy added 25 assists for the Bulldogs while redshirt junior Madison Gordon added 20 assists. Senior Sydney Lanoue added 26 digs for UMD while Kate Berg and Cianna Selbitschka added 15 and 11 respectively for double doubles on the night.
 
Winona State was led by Madison Larson who had 15 kills on the night. Bre Maloney added 43 assists on the night for the Warriors. Becca Pagel added 21 digs on the night while Bre Maloney added 18 digs for a double double.
 
WHO'S NEXT:
The Bulldogs will remain on the road as they travel tomorrow to Upper Iowa to face off with the Peacocks at 2:00 PM tomorrow.
