Duluth, Minn. – The UMD Bulldogs would host the No. 14 Southwest Minnesota Mustangs on Friday night. The Bulldogs would see themselves in a early battle, but would not be able to take control of the match as the Bulldogs would lose 0-3 (24-26, 23-25, 18-25).
In the first set, both teams would trade points before SMSU would take an early 9-5 advantage. After an early time out by Head Coach
Jim Boos, the Bulldogs would be able to rally and tie the set up at 14-14. After that, teams would continue to battle and trade points as the Mustangs would take a slight 22-19 advantage. The Bulldogs however would battle back to draw a 24-24 tie. But in the end, SMSU would be too much for the Bulldogs as they would win the set 26-24.
Southwest Minnesota State would once again jump out to an early lead in the second set as they would take a early 8-3 lead. But much like the second set, the Bulldogs would manage to slowly battle their way back as they would be able to tie it up at 17-17. The Bulldogs would continue their momentum as they would take a 23-22 lead, but the Mustangs would come roaring back as they would go on to score 4 straight points to win the set 25-23.
The third set would see the Mustangs once again jump out to an early 10-5 lead. Much like the first two sets, the Bulldogs would once again battle back to within one at a 12-11 SMSU advantage. The Mustangs would once again take control as they would go on to score 8 of the next 11 points to take a 20-11 lead. UMD would attempt to come back but it would prove to be too late as SMSU would close them out to win the set 25-18 and win the match 3-0.
The Bulldogs were led by fifth year
Kate Berg who had 10 kills on the night. Redshirt junior
Madison Gordon would add 24 assists while Sophomore
Maddi Kealy would add 14 assists.
Sydney Lanoue would add 21 digs on the night while Selbitschka would add 13 digs.
The Mustangs were led by Angela Young who had 16 kills on the night and Meg Schmidt who would add 12 kills. Alisa Bengen would add 17 assists on the night while Sophie Johnson would add 11 assists. Payton Hjerleid and Rachel Fink would both add double digit digs on the night with 11 and 10 respectively.
