Bemidji, Minn. – The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs traveled to face the Bemidji State Beavers on Thursday night. The Bulldogs found themselves in a battle late but won with two seconds left thanks to a
Payton Kahl layup to win the game 61-59.
Both teams came out shooting the ball well as we saw a high scoring first quarter. The Bulldogs shot an impressive 9-13 from the field for 69.2% in the first quarter as they took a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Bemidji State shot 7-15 (46.7%) from the field in the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams' defenses showed up has both offenses were slowed down. The Beavers limited the Bulldogs to just 6-16 (37.5%) shooting in the second quarter as the Bulldogs in turn limited the Beavers to just 5-14 (35.7%) shooting in the second quarter. Despite their poor shooting in the second quarter, the Bulldogs took an 36-29 lead into halftime.
The offensive struggles continued for the Bulldogs as they shot an overall 8-24 (33.3%) from the field in the second half. The Beavers however were able to turn things around as they shot 10-19 (52.6%) from the field. Despite their shooting struggles, the Bulldogs managed to go on an 11-0 run in the third quarter to take a 51-38 lead late in the third quarter. The Bulldogs could not put away the Beavers as the Beavers battled back to force a close game late in the fourth. The Beavers were able to tie up the game 59-59 with 1:03 left in the game. After both teams could not score on back-to-back possessions. The Bulldogs managed to get the ball and held it for one last shot.
Payton Kahl was able to come off a screen and hit a layup with 2 seconds left in the game to give the Bulldogs a 61-59 lead. The Bulldogs then were able to stop the beavers as they went on to win the game 61-59.
The Bulldogs were led by
Brooke Olson who had 19 points on the night.
Maesyn Thiesen added 12 on the night while
Payton Kahl added 7 of her 9 points on the night in the fourth quarter.
Sarah Grow led the team with 8 rebounds while Grow and
Taytum Rhoades led the team with 3 assists each. Overall, the Bulldogs shot 23-53 (43.4%) from the field and 5-15 (33.3%) from three-point range. The Bulldogs also shot 10-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
The Beavers were led by Rachael Heittola who had 20 points on the night while Brooklyn Bachmann added 13 points. Heittola also had 7 rebounds on the night while Trinity Yoder had 6 assists on the night. Overall, the Beavers shot 22-48 (45.8%) from the field and shot 5-12 (41.7%) from three-point range. The Beavers also shot 10-13 (76.9%) from the foul line.
