PAIR OF BULLDOG ALUMS NAMED TO WCHA 1980'S ALL-DECADE TEAM

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced its 1980's All-Decade team on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team had two alums land on the list. Forward Bill Watson and defenseman Tom Kurvers were named to the list of six.

A Powerview, Manitoba. native, Watson was a force for UMD. He played from 1982-85. While with the Bulldogs, Watson was one of just five players in WCHA history to surpass the 100-point mark in a single season, 109 (second all-time single season) to be exact. He also managed to go on a 33-game point streak, which is also second all-time in WCHA history. He earned WCHA Player of the year honors in 84-85 and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team in 1985. Watson was a two-time All-American (83-84, 84-85), two-time WCHA Scoring Champion (83-84, 84-85) and was named All-WCHA twice (83-84, 84-85). He was the 1985 Hobey Baker winner. Watson was also named to the WCHA's Top 50 Players in 50 Years list in 2002 and was named to the UMD Hall of Fame in 1997. He also played four years in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks (115 regular season games). He racked up 210 points in 108 career outings for a school record 1.94 points per game average.

Kurvers, a Bloomington, Minn. native, was a solid player as well. As a Bulldogs, Kurvers totaled 192 points with 43 goals, tops in both categories. He was the 1984 Hobey Baker winner, named the WCHA's MVP in 83-84 and earned All-American honors in 83-84. He was a three-time All-WCHA (81-82, 82-83, 83-84). Kurver is the WCHA's No. 3 point getter among blueliners, No. 4 in assists (149) and No. 7 in goals (43). As a senior, he scored 76 points (18g, 58a) in 1983-84. That point total is second best by a defenseman in a single season in WCHA history. He was named to the WCHA's Top 50 Players in 50 Years list in 2002 and was named to the Hockey News' All-Time WCHA First Team in 1997. After UMD, Kurvers played in the NHL for 11 seasons. His best season was in 88-89 when he scored 16 goals and grabbed 50 assists for 66 points in 74 contests for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also competed for Team USA in the 89 World Championships and was named into the UMD Hall of Fame in 1991.
