Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SIMONET AND OLSON WILL UMD TO NSIC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's basketball team battled the Bemidji State Beavers to a 76-67 victory in the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament semifinals Saturday morning in Sioux Falls, SD. Saturday's victory pushes UMD to 12-1 on the season as the Bulldogs will advance to their third consecutive NSIC Tournament championship game.

Junior forward Brooke Olson opened the scoring in this one, something she has done a lot lately, by converting on a great look from senior guard Ann Simonet. UMD would take the early lead by way of their defense, holding Bemidji State 0-4 from the field on their first four possessions. The Beavers would answer however, tying the game at six apiece going into the first media timeout. Defense would continue to be the overarching theme in the first quarter as both teams forced the other into tough shots and turnovers. UMD lead the low scoring first quarter 13-12 when the clock hit zero.

Olson again would start the scoring in the second quarter and again was found by Simonet. Similar to the first quarter, the game would be very back and forth, with both teams answering one another on the offensive end. Rebounds would play a huge factor in the first half as the Beavers would out-rebound UMD 24-16, including 5-3 on the offensive glass. Both teams were able to find their scoring touch though as the half would end 32-31 in favor of the Beavers.

The start of the third quarter would prove to be a bit wild as both teams traded steals and turnovers without very much point production on the offensive side of the ball. Nearing the halfway point of the frame, UMD was able to put together a quick 5-0 run off of a field goal from freshman guard/forward Ella Gilbertson and a big three pointer from sophomore guard Kaylee Nelson. This would give UMD some breathing room heading into the third quarter media timeout with 3:52 remaining in the frame. Simonet's 11 points in the quarter would go a long way in securing a six point lead for UMD heading into the final quarter of play.

In the final quarter, Bemidji State would force Olson to the bench early in the quarter with foul trouble, but not before tallying four early points. UMD and Bemidji State would go toe to toe for a while before Bemidji State was able to erase the Bulldogs lead, forcing the game into a 59-59 tie with 3:57 remaining in the contest. A span of 20 or so seconds with about three minutes remaining would prove to be the difference in this one. Simonet would find Olson open for a huge three point basket. Simonet however wasn't done as she swiped the inbound pass from the Beavers, which would translate into two free throws from senior guard/forward Payton Kahl. The Bulldogs would record a huge five points in just 26 seconds. Kahl's three point basket with 2:19 remaining would create a six point advantage for UMD and put this one on ice as the Beavers would never get within six points again.

Overall, Olson would lead UMD with 25 points on 10-21 shooting and she also grabbed five boards. Simonet would play a team-high 34 minutes in this one, recording 18 points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc and tallying a team-high eight rebounds including three on the offensive glass and dish out a team high five assists. Kahl and junior guard Maesyn Thiesen would both finish with eight points. Kahl would grab four rebounds and play big defensively recording four steals. Thiesen grabbed three boards. Sophomore guard Taytum Rhoades along with sophomore guard/forward Madelyn Granica would both see significant minutes off the bench with both playing over 20.

With the win, Head Coach Mandy Pearson recorded her 200th win in her collegiate coaching career. She sits just two wins away from 100 career wins at UMD.

UMD will advance to its third consecutive NSIC Tournament Championship game and play  St. Cloud State tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
