BULLDOGS DOWN BEAVERS 10-5 ON SENIOR DAY

Today the University of Minnesota Duluth Baseball team and the Minot State Beavers played the final game of their three-game weekend set from Bulldog Park on the UMD campus. The UMD bats were hot as the Bulldogs produced 10 runs off of 13 hits as they went on to beat the Beavers by a score of 10-5. UMD now sits at 13-22 (10-19) in the NSIC.

Russ Tanner was on the mound for the Bulldogs in today's contest, after the Beavers loaded the bases in the first inning with only one out. Tanner then induced two straight outs in order to retire the side and avoid damage. This allowed the Bulldogs to strike first in today's game, an RBI groundout from Dayo Lawal and RBI single from Tosten Mann put UMD up 2-0 early in the game. Minot State would get one run back in the top of the third before the Bulldog offensive explosion took place. In the bottom of the third, McCale Peterson's RBI double would kick things off Tosten Mann would record his second RBI single of the contest, and Dayo Lawal would score on a wild pitch as the lead stretched to 5-1. An Alex Wattermann RBI single in the bottom of the 4th only added to the UMD lead. The bottom of the fifth inning would be more of the same for the Bulldogs, Tim Pokornowski would get a RBI single off a nasty hop that eluded the reach of the Minot State first baseman, Pokornowski would later come around and score on a wild pitch, and a Lawal walk with the bases loaded would force home a run. All in all, the Bulldogs would score seven combined unanswered runs in the bottom of the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Tanner in total pitched five and two-thirds innings before being removed from the game. Tanner was dominant as he held the Beavers to just two hits until his exit from the game in the sixth inning. In that sixth inning the Beavers would get three runs back off of Tanner bring the score to 9-4 but that is as close as they would come to knotting things up. UMD would get to double digits thanks to Brodie Paulson whose pinch-hit sacrifice fly would add insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Paul Petit would come on to relieve Tanner and pitch two and one-thirds innings of dominant relief pitching, effectively slamming the door on the Beavers comeback effort. The senior right-hander would surrender no runs or walks and only one hit in today's appearance. Alex Wattermann would come on in the ninth inning as he closed this one out to the tune of a 10-5 Bulldog win.
