SOCCER FALLS TO MINOT, 2-0

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team dropped its conference opener today, losing 2-0 to the Minot State Beavers at Malosky Stadium.

Minot got their first goal in the 9th minute, a low shot into the left corner. Despite the Bulldogs pressing more in the second half, the Beavers were able to add an insurance goal in the 88th minute. Their goalkeeper made five total saves to keep the clean sheet.

UMD put the pressure on in the second half, putting up ten shots to Minot's five. UMD ended with 14 total shots, besting the Beavers by one. Goalkeeper Sophia Grenz had four saves on the night.

Eight different Bulldogs recorded shots in tonight's loss. Freshman Anna Tobias led the team with five shots, while Sarah Stange added another three. Julia Osborne, Lauren Singstock, Jackie Jares, Maddie Felton, Kirsten Dagel, and Victoria Thorson each had one shot tonight.

Despite the tough loss, Head Coach Greg Cane was encouraged by what he saw from some of the younger members of the team: "It's very encouraging to see some play from our younger players, or new players in the case of Maddie [Felton] in the back. Rachel [Boelke] played well in the back tonight. Our attacking group is half new players, so they're getting a lot of playing time, and that's because they're doing well and showing it in games -- and that's good to see."

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, taking on the University of Mary at Malosky Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm. For the full schedule, click here.
