No. 4 Minnesota Duluth ended their first road game in a loss against No. 5 Minnesota State, 6-0. As this was their first loss of the season, UMD is now 2-1 overall. The Mavericks will now enter the game tomorrow with a record of 2-1.
The Bulldogs trailed the Mavericks in shots on goal 16-34. Both teams took five penalties, but the Bulldogs had to kill off 13 minutes, compared to 10 for the Mavericks. MSU scored on four of their five power play opportunities.
The first period went in favor of the Mavericks. As the Bulldogs were on a power play, they were called for a two-minute minor. They played the next 40 seconds 4v4, then MSU went on a power play. With 21 seconds left on the Mavericks power play, MSU netted their first goal. The Mavericks found the back of the net again at 13:57 to give them a two goal lead. At 2:19 UMD took a five-minute penalty, where the Mavericks notched another goal. Their power play goal put them at 3-0 to end the first period, and left the Bulldogs scoreless. UMD trailed with shots on goal 3-15.
The Bulldogs tried but could not pick up momentum in the second period. The Bulldogs went into the second playing a man down and took another penalty that put them at two man disadvantage. The Mavericks scored their fourth goal of the night just five seconds into their two man advantage power play. MSU went on another power play late in the second. Minnesota Duluth killed off the penalty but was caught short as their skater made their way back to play, and MSU scored their fifth goal of the game. Ending the second period UMD remained scoreless and trailed in shots on goal 7-31.
Early in the third period MSU went on another power play where they found the back of the net another time. UMD had one more power play but could not break through. Minnesota Duluth held possession for a majority of the remaining time but we held scoreless.
