After a hard fought battle for 60 minutes, No.4 Minnesota Duluth comes up just short of No. 5 Minnesota State 2-1. After the weekend series the Bulldogs now have an overall record of 2-2.
Scoring the lone goal for the week was senior
Luke Loheit. Loheit's goal was his first of the year and 11th in his time with UMD.
In period one, the Mavericks got on the board first after a goal at 7:28. Both teams took two penalties, one of which was roughing after the whistle that resulted in four on four play. UMD killed off both the penalties in the first period. As the Bulldogs had the man advantage for two minutes they were unable to get the puck in the back of the net. UMD trailed MSU 5-6 in shots on goal. Ultimately the first period was scoreless for Minnesota Duluth.
In the second period Minnesota State notched their second goal on a power play. The Bulldogs got the puck in the back of the net but it was waived off after a high sticking call. UMD had the puck and was trying to get out of the zone, but turned it over in front of the goal. As MSU had the odd man advantage, they crossed it from the right side of the goal in hopes to catch Stejskal on the opposite end. The Mavericks were close, but
Blake Biondi made a crucial block in front of the net and kept MSU to a two-goal led. UMD killed off one of the two penalties called in the second. At the end of the period, UMD led in shots on goal 13-12.
The third period was more promising for the Bulldogs. The Mavericks took a minor penalty for holding.
Dominic James brought the puck into the zone and made a clean cross from the left side to
Luke Loheit who made a one-timer up the middle and scored the Bulldogs first goal. The Bulldogs fought the rest of the period to tie it up.
Zach Stejskal was pulled for an empty net at 2:46. The Bulldogs tried to break through with the extra man advantage but could not find the back of the net again.
Up Next Minnesota Duluth will be back at home next weekend Oct. 21-22 for a series against Wisconsin.
