No. 10 Minnesota Duluth was swept by Wisconsin in the home series after dropping Saturday's game 3-0. UMD now has an overall record of 2-4.
Though the Bulldogs were shut out they led the Badgers with shots on goal 35-28.
Dominic James led the Bulldogs in face-off wins with 17-10, which helped boost UMD to a face-off percentage of 52.2%. Of the 45 shot attempts by the Badgers,
Matthew Thiessen saved 25 and UMD blocked eight.
In the first period, UMD had 16 shots on goal but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. The Badgers scored first to take the lead just 3:57 into the game. Minnesota Duluth killed off three penalties in the first period and was given one power play opportunity but couldn't get a goal out of it. At the end of the first period, UMD and Wisconsin were tied with 12 shots on goal, and the Badgers had the lead 1-0.
At 3:01 in the second period, UMD took a two-minute minor and gave up a power play goal at 3:08 to put them behind 2-0. The Bulldogs then took a five minute penalty and successfully killed it off. In the second, Minnesota Duluth had two power play opportunities but still could not get past Wisconsin's defense. At the end of the second period UMD led shots on goal 11-8, but still trailed the Badgers 2-0.
To start off the third period the Badgers took a penalty at 1:04. The Bulldogs fought to break through but were unsuccessful. In hopes to get something on the board, UMD pulled the goalie at 17:52. For almost two minutes, the Bulldogs held on to the puck from the Badgers, but turned it over at the blue line and Wisconsin scored an empty net goal at 19:35. Closing out the third period, UMD still led in shots 12-8, but ultimately fell 3-0.
Up Next Minnesota Duluth will be home next weekend Oct. 28-29 for a home series against Cornell.
