Minnesota Duluth football defeated UMary by a landslide of 49-14. The Bulldogs remain undefeated by the Marauders, and will now have a 15-0 all-time record. UMD now sits in the NSIC with an overall record of 4-2 and divisional record of 2-0. UMary will leave Duluth with an overall record of 1-5.
"I'm proud of the way our guys played," said head coach
Curt Wiese. "On the year, I think that was as complete a game as we have played in a long time. To be able to beat a team, a good football team, like that we had to click in all three phases and we finally did that today."
To start off the game, the Marauders were in possession of the ball looking to make a pass. On their first play, Drew Hennessy sacked the quarterback for a loss of six yards. During UMary's second possession, defensive back
Rayshion Brumfield made an interception at the Marauders' 40 yard line. The Bulldogs used the possession switch to their advantage. UMD made six plays for 42 yards. Running back
Wade Sullivan danced into the end zone after a 22 yard rush to the left. Later in the first quarter,
Brady Herbst and
Caden Osmonson made back-to-back sacks for a loss of 29 total yards. UMD finished the quarter leading 7-0.
As the Bulldogs went into the second quarter in the middle of a drive they looked to extend their lead further.
Noah Skifton caught a deep 18 yard pass to put UMD at the Marauders' 16 yard line.
Kyle Walljasper rushed a short two yard into the end zone and gave UMD a 14 point lead. During the Marauder's next drive
Tim Pokornowski intercepted their deep pass to put UMD at UMD's 44 yard line. Two drives later Minnesota Duluth found the end zone once again on a 75 yard drive off seven plays. On the second play,
Armani Carmickle completed a crucial deep 45 yard pass from
Logan Graetz to move Bulldogs to the UMA30. To score the touchdown, Walljasper rushed five yards, for his second of the game. As the Marauders were down 21-0 they responded back with a touchdown late in the second quarter to end the half 21-7.
Coming off a strong first half, the Bulldogs picked up right where they left off. On their first drive they made nine plays for 75 yards. On the third play UMD was third and eight. Olson made another deep 19 yard pass to Carmickle to give them a first down at the UMD 46. Finishing the drive, Walljasper scored his third touchdown on a seven yard rush. With a good kick from
Curtis Cox, UMD was ahead 28-7. UMary tried to respond back on their next drive, as they had gained 75 yards on eight plays. The Marauders were in the red zone and attempted a deep pass into the end zone, but
Dayvia Gbor intercepted. The Bulldogs were then faced with moving the ball 100 yards for another touchdown.
Minnesota Duluth continued their drive into the fourth quarter. UMD found the UMA 15 in nine plays with a few key deep passes by Olson. On the 10th play, wide receiver
Noah Skifton made a deep 15 yard pass to quarterback
Garrett Olson in the end zone. Olson's touchdown put UMD ahead by 28 points. UMary came back on the next drive with a touchdown off a six play drive. UMD scored on their next drive of 62 yards in two plays. The first play was an 11 yard rush by Walljasper, followed by a wide open 51 yard rush for his fourth touchdown of the game. Cox made another good kick, extending the lead to 42-14. The defense held the Marauders' next two drives to just four plays each forcing them to punt. UMary punted just 30 yards to place UMD at the UMA31. With the 28 point lead in the fourth quarter, UMD's drives saw a few new faces. Red-shirt freshman
Nate Elmes was put in as quarterback for Minnesota Duluth's next drive. Elmes passed the ball off to
Levon Bellemy for a nine yard rush to place them at the Marauders' 22 yard line. With no hesitation, Elmes threw a deep 22 yard pass to Skifton in the end zone to add seven more points on their lead. UMary fought for the last three minutes of the game but were left with a final decision of 49-14.
Minnesota Duluth's offense dominated the game against UMary. The Bulldogs led the Marauders with 568 total offensive yards and 25 first downs. Walljasper scored four touchdowns and led the Bulldogs with 123 rushing yards for a career high. Olson recorded 250 passing yards, with his longest at 45 yards. Elmes threw a touchdown with his first career pass. Leading the Bulldogs in receiving yards was Carmickle with 77. With seven touchdowns, UMD had their highest scoring game of the season.
The Bulldog defense also had a strong game against UMary. UMD held UMA to just 207 total offensive yards and 15 first downs. The defense made 44 tackles on the Marauders' 53 plays. UMD took 60 yards on eight of the tackles. The Bulldogs recorded seven sacks for a loss of 57 yards. Notching three of those sacks and 27 yards was linebacker
Drew Hennessey. UMD also tallied three interceptions from Pokornowski, Gbor, and Brumfield.
