Minnesota Duluth played a strong game against the Omaha Mavericks but fell short 3-2. The Bulldogs now have an overall record of 5-6 and 1-2 in conference play. The Mavericks will go into tomorrow's game now 5-4-2 and 1-1-1 in conference play.
The Bulldogs to notch two points tonight were
Jesse Jacques, with a goal and assist, and
Owen Gallatin, with two assists.
Tanner Laderoute also recorded a goal tonight to give him a point, along with
Blake Biondi with one assist.
Matthew Thiessen finished the game with 40 saves.
The Bulldogs started the game strong with good pressure and held possession for most of the period. Late in the period the Mavericks found the open net to take the lead 1-0. Neither team took a penalty in the first period and they were tied in shots on goal at the end of the period 9-9.
UMD went into the second period down by one and looked to tie it up. Wasting no time, Gallatin made a pass to Biondi in the middle who ripped a shot. The puck was tipped off Jacques and fell behind the goalies head into the net. As Jacques' goal tied up the game, he also notched his first goal of the season just 1:39 into the second. While the goal was happening Omaha was called for holding and put UMD on their first power play of the night. Though they controlled the puck and had shots on goal, they couldn't take the lead. After their power play opportunity, UMD was called for their penalty and successfully killed it off. At 12:25 into the period, Gallatin brought the puck around to the back of the net. Gallatin made a pass up to the blue line to Jacques who fired one through the screen, where Laderoute tipped it in to take the lead 2-1. In the second period UMD out-shot UNO 16-9.
As UMD took a penalty late in the second period, they went into the third at a one-man disadvantage. With just two seconds left in their power play, the Mavericks tied it up 2-2. UMD took another minor penalty and Omaha was able to get the lead back of the net and take the lead 3-2 at 11:33. The Bulldogs were battling and making solid shots on goal in hopes to tie it back up. At 13:31 UMD took a five minute penalty. As they successfully killed it off, they fought for the last minute and a half. Although UMD came up short in the end, they played a strong game in the third, out shooting the Mavericks 15-8.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will be back for another round against the Mavericks tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. During tomorrow's game the team will display accents of purple to highlight awareness surrounding men's mental health and help promote UMD Men's Hockey Movember Campaign. There will also be a teddy bear toss during the intermission.
