Minnesota Duluth fell to No.14 Western Michigan after the Broncos scored two late in the third period. With the Bulldogs win last night, they will split the series and come out with three conference points. UMD has now gone 7-7 overall and 3-3 in NCHC play.
Scoring for UMD tonight was
Cole Spicer,
Dominic James, and
Ben Steeves. James and Steeves secured two points as they both notched an assist.
Carter Loney,
Owen Gallatin,
Wyatt Kaiser, and
Isaac Howard tallied one assist each.
At the beginning of the first period UMD went on the power play just four minutes in. During the power play, Loney brought the puck out of the corner to Gallatin who brought it to the front of the net. Unable to make a shot he passed it off to Spicer at the top of the crease. Spicer put the puck in the bottom corner of the net and gave UMD a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game. WMU responded back quickly with a goal a minute later to tie it back up. With just a minute and a half left in the first period, Kaiser passed the puck off in the defensive zone to Steeves who carried it through the neutral zone and across the blue line. Steeves trailed it back to James who fired one past Cameron Rowe to take the lead back 2-1. Though the Bulldogs had the lead at the end of the period, they were out-shot by WMU 5 to 9
Around the halfway point of the second period both teams took two penalties in two minutes. UMD were able to get shots on target but couldn't find the back of the net and all the penalties were killed off. Late in the second period, Howard made a pass up the ice to James at the blue line to fire one on net. Steeves picked up the rebound on the right side and sent a one timer past Rowe. The Bulldogs led at the end of the period 3-2, but still trailed in shots on goal 8 to 16.
In the third period, the Broncos tied it up 3-3 with 10:12 left in the game after they scored a goal off a delayed penalty. The Bulldogs killed off the penalty following the goal and only allowed one shot on goal. UMD took another penalty with only 4:06 left in the game. WMU capitalized on their man-advantage and took the lead 4-3. UMD pulled Thiessen as the period was nearing an end to try and tie it back up. The Broncos got the puck on a turnover and scored an empty net goal to make it 5-3 at the end of the period.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will take a weekend off and be back at AMSOIL Arena on Dec. 2 to start a home series against Colorado College.
