Minnesota Duluth closed out the year with a 2-1 win against St. Thomas in their exhibition game Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs fought back in the second period to come back from a one goal deficit.
Scoring for UMD in tonight's game was
Dominic James and
Luke Mylymok. Notching an assist each was
Ben Steeves and
Luke Loheit.
To open up the exhibition game, the Bulldogs went on a power play just five minutes in. Though having good scoring opportunities, UMD couldn't find the back of the net. With just 59 seconds left in the first, St. Thomas netted the first goal to lead at the end of the period.
Zach Stejskal started in the crease for UMD and made eight saves.
Halfway through the second period, Loheit passed the puck off to Steeves in the defensive zone, where he carried it up the right side to the face-off circle. Steeves passed it across the ice to James who sent a one-timer into the net, tying it up 1-1 for UMD. At 14:42 Mylymok looked to make a pass from behind the net, but missed his intended target. Though he missed his target the Tommies skaters missed handled the puck leaving it open in front of the net, where Mylymok picked it up for an unassisted go-ahead goal. Freshman
Zach Sandy saw action in the crease for the entire 20 minutes in the second period. In his first game playing for the Bulldogs, he made nine saves and did not allow a single goal.
The third period was scoreless for both teams in the third. The Bulldogs killed off the two penalties they took in the period. UMD played
Matthew Thiessen in the crease for the third where he also made eight saves.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will take the road Friday to Bemidji as a part of the home-and-home series Jan. 6-7. The Bulldogs will then return to Duluth for a home game on Saturday against the Beavers.
