The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team battled against the Winona State Warriors in a tough conference matchup. The Bulldogs created multiple scoring opportunities out shooting the Warriors 11 shots to their five.
Defensively the Bulldogs were tested in today's match. Winona was off to an early start on offense, creating pressure for UMD's defenders.
Abbie Gotham made several notable saves, but Winona would score off a corner kick in the first half.
After a strong showing of opportunities offensively for the Bulldogs, the Warriors gained possession of the ball. WSU would then gain a second goal, deflected off a UMD defender.
The Bulldogs answered with their own goal late in the second half when
Hannah Caldwell put her first goal of the season in net. This is Caldwell's first goal since the 2019 season due to the covid season and a 2021 injury redshirt season.
The second half started out strong for the Bulldogs, with multiple scoring opportunities and testing the Warrior defense. Off a corner kick, WSU would score their final goal, giving them a two score lead.
The Bulldogs answered back by creating multiple scoring chances nearly giving them the lead. UMD would rotate in several forwards to capitalize on those opportunities, but ultimately fall to the Warriors three to one.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-1-1 in conference and will head south for their next NSIC matchup, where they will take on Sioux falls Friday Sept. 23.
