In the opening game at Baxter Arena, Minnesota Duluth made a late comeback in the third to tie the game up, but ultimately fell 3-2 after a late UNO goal.
Scoring for the Bulldogs in the opening game against Omaha was
Owen Gallatin and
Dominic James. In addition,
Aiden Dubinsky,
Luke Mylymok, and
Luke Loheit each added an assist tonight.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in the first period. Having taken three penalties, UMD was on a penalty kill for 6 of the 20 minutes in the first. The Mavericks netted the first goal of the night during their second power play giving them a one goal lead at the end of the period. The Bulldogs were out-shot 11-4 in the first period.
The next 20 minutes remained scoreless for the Bulldogs. UMD went on the power play three times, though they were not able to get anything past Jake Kucharski. During UMD's first power play, the Mavericks snagged the puck and scored a short handed goal to extend their lead 2-0, and continued to out-shoot UMD 9-8.
Early in the third period, Mylymok picked up the puck on a turnover, sliding it to Dubinsky. Dubinsky passed it to fellow linemate Gallatin, who brought it around to the left and netted the Bulldogs first goal. Later in the period, UMD took a minor penalty. With about 30 seconds left in the penalty kill, Loheit connected a pass with James in the neutral zone. Once in the offensive zone James fired a rocket in the face-off circle to score a short handed goal and tie the game up. The Mavericks then came back a few minutes later, scoring the go-ahead game winning goal.
Although Omaha is ranked third in the nation on power plays, UMD finished the night 1-4 on the penalty kill.
UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will be back at Baxter Arena tomorrow night for their second game of the road series again the Omaha Mavericks. The puck will drop tomorrow at 7:07 p.m.
