The No. 14 University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team completed their series sweep against Bemidji State University in their first road game of the season. Through their first five games, UMD is undefeated (3-0-2).
Â
Tonight's game wasn't always in favor of the Bulldogs, however. They took three penalties in the first period, including a five-minute major and drew only one in return. UMD's penalty kill unit gave up two power play goals. They were outshooting BSU, but the score remained 2-0 at the end of the period.Â
Â
Early in the second, the Beavers had another power play opportunity. After a successful kill, UMD regained their stride. They continued to outshoot BSU and forced multiple turnovers in the offensive zone. Blake Biondi nearly capitalized twice.Â
Â
With just under seven minutes left in the period, the Bulldogs finally found the back of the net. Jack Smith won an offensive zone faceoff back to defenseman Riley Bodnarchuk. From the top of the circle, Bodnarchuk shot without hesitation and scored his first collegiate goal.Â
Â
A minute and a half later, Ben Steeves skated in from the top of the opposite circle and sent the puck past the BSU goaltender's outstretched glove.Â
Â
In the third period, both teams doubled their point totals. The Bulldogs struck first, when Kyle Bettens sent home a bouncing puck.Â
Â
BSU was called for delay of game and UMD was awarded a penalty shot as a result. Alternate captain Quinn Olson calmly skated up and scored his team's fourth unanswered goal blockerside.
Â
The Beavers weren't out of the game, yet. They scored once with seven minutes left in regulation and then again with their goaltender pulled and just over two minutes on the clock.Â
Â
For the third time in five games, the Bulldogs were headed to overtime.Â
Â
No need for a shootout, however, with sophomore Cole Spicer scoring 27 seconds into extra time. He fought through pressure from a BSU skater, who lost his stick and gave Spicer a clear shot.Â
Â
The last time UMD was undefeated through their first five games was the 2021-22 season (4-0-1). That's also the last time the Bulldogs swept the Beavers.Â
Â
UMD plays on the road again Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 versus Cornell at 6 p.m. CDT.
