Volleyball Pushes Past Winona State in Four Set Victory, Selbitschka Reaches 1,000 Career Kills

The #14 ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team got back into the win column in tonight's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) matchup with a four set victory over the Winona State University Warriors.

Set One: UMD (18) - WSU (25)

UMD started off the match slowly, giving up the first point of the match on a WSU service ace and only collecting one point throughout the first five. They would struggle to find a groove in their offense, tallying seven attack errors and two service errors throughout the first set. Despite a late surge of consistency that created a few strings of consecutive points, the Bulldogs would give up five points in a row to end the set 18-25.

Set Two: UMD (25) - WSU (21)

The shift in momentum for the Bulldogs started off in set two, collecting the first point for themselves on a kill from senior middle blocker Grace Daak. The two teams would continue to trade points back and forth through the early portion of the set before a string of three points for UMD would help them keep a slight lead through the middle minutes. The lead would switch after a string of five points for the Warriors gave them a 17-19 advantage, but UMD would come back to take over and collect the final four points of the set with help from a Kaylyn Madison service ace.

Set Three: UMD (25) - WSU (23)

The Bulldogs jumped at the opportunity for another strong start, collecting the first three points of set three. An early surge of four straight points would put the Bulldogs up to an early lead of 10-5, a lead that they would hold onto for a majority of the set. Despite a late surge of offense from WSU with a few four and five point strings, the Dogs would string together four points of their own to finish off the set 25-23.

Set Four: UMD (25) - WSU (18)

UMD collected the opening point of the final set, and would yet again continue to trade points back and forth with the Warriors. However, it would seem that the woes of errors that haunted the Bulldogs throughout set one would come back to affect WSU. The Warriors would tally nine attack errors throughout the set and end with just a .044 hitting percentage, ending the night at a seven point deficit and a final score of 25-18.

Selbitshcka reaches 1,000

Senior outside hitter Cianna Selbitschka becomes the 23rd UMD volleyball player to reach 1,000 career kills. Since joining the program in the 2021-22 season, Selbitschka now sits at 1,005 total kills and 2,630 total attacks throughout her career.

Top Performers

Adding onto her historical night, Cianna Selbitschka also comes away with another double double performance after tallying 16 total kills and 16 digs. Graduate student setter Madison Gordon also collects a double double for herself, racking up 44 assists and 11 total digs. Gordon would also lead the match in hitting percentage tonight, topping the charts with a .435.
