Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Jenna VanSickle

Bulldogs Drop Series to Big Red, Lose Second Game 3-0

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team played their second game of an away series versus Cornell University tonight, hoping to split the weekend. The Bulldogs, however, never found their footing and dropped the contest 3-0.

Tonight's game started at a very different pace than the previous matchup between these two teams. Eight minutes into the first period, UMD and CU had one shot each, neither on net.

The Bulldogs were awarded the game's first power play, but were unable to do much more than register their first shot on goal. In turn, the Big Red went on the power play. Both were interference calls.

While CU had a couple of rebound chances, they were also unable to convert. The period ended with shots on goal in favor of the Big Red (3-1), but UMD had six more overall shots.

The Bulldogs held off their opponent in the first twenty minutes, but as play resumed things changed rapidly for UMD. Four minutes in, an offensive rush broke through the Bulldog defense, connecting from one CU player on the goal line to another net-front and in. Eighty-three seconds later, a Big Red defenseman took a shot from inside the blue line. The puck was deflected by traffic and ended up in the back of the net.

After some pushing and shoving in front of the CU net from both sides, only one UMD player was sent to the penalty box. The Big Red power play unit waited to stretch out the penalty kill and toss the puck across the Bulldogs zone. Senior Gabriel Seger had an open shot from close range and tallied his second goal of the night.

The Bulldogs continued to outshoot the Big Red, but it wasn't enough. Down by three, UMD hoped a power play opportunity would reignite their scoring. In the two minutes following a call on CU, the Bulldogs shots were either wide or blocked before they got to the net.

UMD evened the shots on goal (10) after forty minutes. They'd forced their opponent to make 17 blocks, with six players putting up more than one. Cole Spicer led both teams with faceoff wins (9).

With eight and a half minutes left in the game, a Big Red player tripped over Matthew Thiessen as he made a save and tempers on both sides flared after the whistle. This time, both sides sent a player to the penalty box.

Play continued 4-on-4. The open ice gave the Bulldogs some momentum, with solid chances on net. It was cut short by their forth penalty of the night. A CU hit at center ice was reviewed and determined by officials to be a five minute major on the Big Red, with only 2:44 left to play. UMD pulled their goalie and closed out the game 6-on-4.

This was the Bulldogs first losing weekend of the season, following a five-game undefeated streak.

UMD plays next on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. versus the No. 1 University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
