BEMIDJI, Minn. – The 11
th-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team got back in the win column Tuesday night, rallying from a set down to defeat Bemidji State University in four sets in midweek Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action.
How It Happened
A
Grace Daak kill was the first point of the match, but the Beavers responded with the next four points. The Bulldogs regained the lead at 12-9 following a
Samantha Paulsen kill. However, Bemidji State answered with a 6-1 run to take the lead back. The Beavers then closed the set out strong with another 6-1 run to win 25-19.
The Beavers (6-8, 3-3 NSIC) held the advantage early in the second set and led 7-4, until Minnesota Duluth had the next five points to take its first lead of the set at 9-7. The Bulldogs maintained the lead until Bemidji State scored three consecutive points to go out in front 17-16. With the score 22-21 BSU, the Bulldogs were in danger of falling behind by two sets. UMD then got three straight points from
Madeline Guetzkow and
Hope Schjenken to set up a pair of set points. After the Beavers fended off one set point, Guetzkow terminated the next rally to give the Bulldogs the second set 25-23.
UMD registered the first five points of the third set and held a healthy advantage for much of the set until Bemidji State made it interesting late getting within 23-21. However, the Bulldogs were able to hold off the Beavers as
Payton Addink returned to the lineup and gave UMD the set at 25-22.
The fourth set was all Minnesota Duluth, leading by as much as 10 on a few occasions, to win going away 25-16. The Bulldogs remain unbeaten away from Duluth this season at 7-0.
Top Performers
Cianna Selbitschka recorded another double-double with a team-high 14 kills and a team-high 14 digs. Selbitschka eclipsed 900 career kills and 800 digs in the match. Daak finished with eight kills with no hitting errors to go along with a season-high five total blocks. Daak went over 600 career kills in the victory. Guetzkow added another season high with eight kills and seven digs.
Maddi Kealy, who played the final three sets, matched a career-high with 25 assists.

The Bulldogs (11-4, 4-3 NSIC) stay away from Duluth this weekend as they take on the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Friday and eighth-ranked Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. The Sioux Falls match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
