The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team took on St. Cloud State University for the second time this weekend. Despite UMD's first 5-goal performance in a month and a tie-game through two periods, the Bulldogs came up short. SCSU held onto their third period lead and won 6-5.
The Huskies scoring started early. They opened just 1:46 into play and took back the lead with 2:14 left. In between, the Bulldogs fought for scoring chances and got one. UMD's Blake Biondi used his stick to redirect a flying puck from Owen Gallatin on the man-advantage.
With seconds on the clock, freshman Anthony Menghini sent the puck towards the net. From nearly the same spot Gallatin passed earlier, Menghini re-tied the game, 2-2. The Huskies were unable to bookend the period and both of their early leads were neutralized.
Thirty seconds into the second frame, SCSU was called for cross-checking. After an official review, they assessed the Huskies a 5-minute major penalty and game misconduct. In the middle of the UMD power play, the Bulldogs were called for holding, but a later holding call on SCSU meant they spent five of the first nine minutes in the second period with the man-advantage.
It wasn't UMD who scored next, however. Halfway through the period, the Huskies held the lead for a third time, with physicality increasing on both sides. In the second' final minutes, the Bulldogs answered once again. Gallatin shot from the top of the circle into traffic. SCSU attempted to clear the rebound, but UMD regained possession. Once the puck was back on Gallatin's stick, he skated in for a clear shot.
Early in the final period, SCSU got their first multi-goal lead of the game. After stealing a zone clearing attempt, they scored just 39 seconds in. Less than three minutes later, the Huskies found the back of the net again.
The scoring flurry continued all the way to the final horn, with UMD's Quinn Olson tallying a wrap-around goal, followed by a late goal for each team. The Bulldogs made one final push with a minute left and their goaltender pulled, but could not tie the game back up.
UMD returns to AMSOIL Arena next month against Omaha Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 2 at 5:07 p.m.
