UMD Loses in Overtime to Omaha After a Scoreless Game

The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team picked up a point in tonight's 1-0 overtime loss to the University of Nebraska Omaha. The game was scoreless through three periods, despite odd-man chances for both sides.

The Bulldogs earned their first four National Collegiate Hockey Conference points of the season this weekend.

In his second appearance of the series, Zach Stejskal made 30 saves, combining for 49 total. Tonight was his third-highest save performance this season, following both games against Michigan Tech (32, 40).

The teams over doubled last night's 30 minute goal-drought. For the second night in a row, UMD not only outshot UNO in the first period, but doubled their total as well.

The Bulldogs came out for the second period with speed, but couldn't stop themselves from getting caught up in penalty calls. Each team took two in the first period and UMD added two more in the second. They successfully killed all four penalties, but fell behind in shots on goal, spending more time in the defensive zone.

Just as the buzzer sounded to end the period, two opposing players collided at the red line. After all the players on the ice were separated and returned to their benches, an official review assessed a major penalty to UMD for charging.

On the 5-minute penalty kill to start the third period, the Bulldogs were tactical and effective. They blocked six shots and traded off sticks twice when netfront defenders broke theirs. They killed off the major and another minor penalty later in the period. Not only that, but the last kill featured two two-man rushes by a short-handed UMD unit.

Even with a third chance, the nation-leading Bulldog power play couldn't find the back of the net. Neither team could through the 60 minutes of regulation, despite close calls and post-ringing shots.

Three minutes into overtime, a UNO skater pivoted at center ice, scooping up an overskated puck. The Mavericks went in 2-on-2, but only needed Jack Randl. He sent home his second goal of the weekend, ending the game.

The Bulldogs play one final fall semester series next weekend at Miami University (Ohio) on Friday, December 8 and 9 at 6 p.m.
