UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Competition
Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.
Sidney Zavoral of the University of Minnesota Duluth softball team earned NSIC Player of the Week honors for her efforts last weekend, per a conference release. It's Zavoral's first time earning this moniker across her career. UMD has now seen a player earn a conference accolade in each of the season's first two weeks, with Allyssa Williams having been crowned NSIC Pitcher of the Week earlier in the year.
Zavoral played in three of UMD's four victories across yet another sweep of an Invitational slate. In each of these performances, the senior catcher certainly made herself known.
It all started with a trifecta of threes: a three-hit, three-RBI, three-run outing against Bemidji State on Saturday, Feb. 11. And why not top it off with a home run, Zavoral's first of the season? When it came time to face BSU once again the following day on Feb. 12, the Cottage Grove, Minn. native was just as up to the task. Zavoral went a perfect 2/2 from the plate, scoring three more times and generating another RBI in the process. Another day, another dinger- the senior also slashed her second home run in as many games in this one. Finally, it was time to play tournament-host St. Cloud State- and not much changed in terms of Zavoral's output. A 2/3 hitting effort drove in three more RBIs and saw the senior score another run herself. And, of course… she hit yet another home run.
All told, Zavoral's final tally from the plate this past weekend consisted of seven hits, seven RBIs and seven runs. Not only did she record three homers, but she also hit a triple and a double along the way. This left the senior with an overall slash line of .778/.800/2.111 on the weekend.
But there's more to Zavoral's game than just her work at the plate- she's also a force in her duties behind the bag. As a catcher, the senior recorded nine putouts and an assist across her three appearances this weekend.
UMD softball will look to continue its winning ways on the road once again this coming weekend as it takes part in the Emporia State Classic. Weather is causing an ongoing shift in start times for this event- full schedule updates will be released shortly.
