BULLDOGS DROP GAME TWO 4-1 TO NO. 10 WESTERN MICHIGAN

The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs closed the series with No. 10 Western Michigan with a 4-1 loss. Despite being swept at home, UMD picked up one conference point this weekend after taking WMU to overtime Friday.

Scoring the lone goal tonight for UMD was Quinn Olson. Carter Loney and Darian Gotz each tagged an assist off Olson's goal.

The Bulldogs went a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill tonight. UMD also led faceoff wins 26-23, with Dominic James going 9-1 in the faceoff circle.

To open the game, the Broncos controlled the puck for a majority of the first period. WMU struck first with a back-door goal to take a 1-0 lead over UMD. The Bulldogs took two penalties in the first but successfully killed them off to keep the game at a one goal margin. The first period ended with shots on goal 10-6 and a score of 1-0, both in WMU's favor.

In the second, UMD was given their only power play opportunity of the night. With 30 seconds remaining on the power play, the Bulldogs gave up a short handed goal to put them behind by two. UMD still trailed in shots on goal 6-5 at the end of the second period.

Going into the last period down by two goals, UMD found a boost of momentum. With a strong effort throughout the period, the Bulldogs found the back of the net at 13:38. The puck was played the whole 200 feet, starting with Gotz behind the UMD net. Gotz passed the puck off to Loney in the defensive zone. Still in the defensive zone, Loney connected with Olson who was waiting at the blue line all alone. On a breakaway, Olson netted UMD's only goal of the night. The Bulldogs then gave up a third goal on the next shift falling back to a two goal deficit. WMU would later net an empty net goal to solidify their win 4-1.

UP NEXT Minnesota Duluth will have a weekend off, then take the road to Denver for a series on Feb. 17-18.
