Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.
Evansville, In.-
Joshua Strong of the University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team took home the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division II men's basketball championship as part of the Elite Eight's opening banquet on Sunday. It's just the second time any UMD athlete's ever earned the accolade across any sport, the first and only other example being Grant Pulver of the men's track and field program back in 2017.
Strong, a sophomore majoring in Entrepreneurship, currently carries a 3.983 GPA. On the court, the guard's averaging 6.5 points, 2.2 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game. Strong's shooting at nearly 40% from deep, clocking in at 39.4%.
The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above academically who have participated in a sport for at least two years with their school. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
