The University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team welcomes Paige Decker, Madeline Guetzkow, Kiley Nihart and Madison Reed as its 2023 recruiting class.
Paige Decker is an outside hitter out of Rochester, Minn. A two-year captain and four-year starter at Rochester Century High School, Decker's name features prominently in her alma mater's record books. She set the kills record in 2021 just to do it again the following season in 2022. Decker was a first-team all-area member, earned a Big 9 all-conference nod and was a two-time all-state honoree. She was an all-star award recipient at the 2021 AAU Nationals. For all of her success on the court, Decker also holds a strong resume off of it. A National Honor Society member and AP Scholar with Distinction, she earned academic all-state honors over her time at Century. Decker was also the leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle. She plans to study biology at UMD.
Madeline Guetzkow is a right-side hitter from Mayer, Minnesota. She was a three-year starter at Mayer Lutheran High school, a captain during her senior season. In both 2021 and 2022, Guetzkow landed on the all-conference team while being named 1st-team all-state member. In 2021, she was placed on the Minnesota state all-tournament team. It was that same season in which Guetzkow's Crusaders won the Class A State Championship. Mayer Lutheran would win the Section 2A Championship in 2022 on the path to a second-straight Class A State Title game appearance. A two-sport athlete, Guetzkow also found success on the basketball court, where she played guard. All this while still achieving big things in the classroom - Guetzkow was a National Honor Society member. She plans to continue her academic journey by studying business management at UMD.
The third member of the class is Kiley Nihart. The Faribault, Minn. native is no stranger to the college volleyball space, having played at Rochester Community and Technical College for two seasons before transferring to UMD. Her libero work as a Yellowjacket earned her quite a lot of recognition. Nihart landed on both the All-Minnesota Athletic Conference (MCAC) Team and the MCAC Elite Team in 2021 while also being an All-South Division First Team member. She followed that up with repeat appearances on the All-MCAC Team and the All-South Division First Team in 2022, this time pairing those accolades with an All-Region 13 appearance and a Second Team All-American award. Before any of this, Nihart also enjoyed a successful high school career at Medford, where she was a three-year starter and two-year captain. Over the course of a career as a Tiger that saw her surpass the 1000-dig mark, Nihart placed second at state as a junior, third as a senior. In 2018, she was an all-tournament team honoree. Nihart is yet another example of a volleyball athlete who's success has transcended that sport. She was a four-year starter as a guard on Medford's basketball team, earning four-straight all-conference and academic all-conference nods along the way. Speaking of academics, Nihart plans to continue a strong academic journey by studying exercise science with a minor in coaching at UMD.
Last but certainly not least is Madison Reed. Reed is the lone Wisconsinite in the class, hailing from Balsam Lake. A two-year captain at Unity High School, Reed certainly amassed quite a resume. For one thing, she broke eight school records during her tenure at Unity, including setting a new touchstone with 1,546 career digs. This benchmark-setting talent was put on display in the Lakeland Conference, where Reed was the outright Player of the Year in 2022. Naturally, this was paired with a First Team All-Conference nod. It was already Reed's third All-Conference honor, going alongside another First Team placement in 2021 and a Second Team nom in 2020. But success extended far beyond an individual level - Reed and company won back-to-back conference championships in 2021 and 2022. The laundry list of honors goes on and on and on, pushing us past the conference level and into state-wide recognition. Reed was a WVCA Division 3 All-State Honorable Mention in 2021 before landing on the First Team in 2022. She and her fellow Eagles won the WIAA Regional Championship in both 2021 and 2022 and were sectional Champions (thus qualifying for state) in that 2021 effort. Reed has also landed plenty of achievements off the volleyball court. A three-sport athlete at Unity, she helped guide her basketball team to a conference and regional title while doing the same thing for her track team (in both 2021 and 2022) while qualifying for state as a pole vaulter. All this, and Reed is still sure to hit the books. A member of the National Honor Society Student Council, she landed on the WVCA Division 3 Academic All-State team in 2021 and 2022. Reed plans to continue her scholastic pursuits by studying Business at UMD.
