The University of Minnesota Duluth men's basketball team was placed at No. 6 in the NCAA Tournament, the league revealed as part of Selection Sunday. It's the second-straight season UMD has made it to March Madness, having previously made the tourney last season for the first time since 2003.
The Bulldogs' first round draw is No. 3 Central Oklahoma of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Bronchos finished the season with a 26-5 overall record and an 18-4 conference mark that allowed them to finish second in the MIAA in the regular season. Central Oklahoma made it all the way to the MIAA Tournament Championship before losing to Northwest Missouri State 61-53.
UMD will square off against Central Oklahoma in Maryville, Mo. on Saturday, March 11 at 12:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs enter the tournament on the back of what has been a successful 2022-23 campaign. UMD holds a 23-9 record bolstered by a 16-6 mark in NSIC play that saw them finish third overall in the conference. Come NSIC Tournament time, the Bulldogs were as locked-in as they'd been all year. UMD made a run all the way from the first round to their second-straight NSIC Championship game before falling to MSU Moorhead in a tight 79-69 contest.
For UMD head coach Justin Wieck, this is already his third 20+ win season in just five years behind the Bulldog bench. Wieck enters this year's tournament with an overall record of 93-41, a 69.4% winning percentage.
UMD is one of three programs representing the NSIC in the NCAA Tournament, the others being No. 2 Northern State No. 4 MSU Moorhead. Three teams made it out of the MIAA, with Central Oklahoma joining No. 1 Northwest Missouri State and No. 7 Emporia State. No. 5 Southern Nazarene and No. 8 Southern Arkansas are the reps of the Great American Conference (GAC).
All Central Region contests will be streamed free of charge through the MIAA Network at themiaanetwork.com. A full game schedule will be announced within the coming days.
