The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team secured their first sweep of the season, beating West Virginia Wesleyan 12-6 and Lewis 7-2 on Sunday, March 5. This brings the Bulldogs to an overall record of 3-2.
Game 1:
The Bulldogs had a rocky start on Sunday morning's game against Virginia Wesleyan, falling to an early deficit of 3-0. This would be short lived however, when the Bulldogs turned around and scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs' lead came in the form of a grand slam by freshman Thomas Hanson, scoring Alex Wattermann, Tim Pokornowski, and Trevor Gustafson as well as himself.
Defensively the Bulldogs held the Bobcats at three in the second inning, which opened the door for the Bulldogs to extend their lead. UMD was able to score another run to bring their lead to 5-3.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth the Bulldogs opened up the lead scoring four more runs. A few early inning errors led to the first run of the inning, followed by Ethan Cole who blasted a triple to score two runs. The inning ended with Austin Gordon stealing home successfully and bringing the score to 9-3.
The Score remained the same until the top of the 6th when the Bobcats notched their first run since the first. They would go on to score another two runs at the top of the seventh before the Bulldogs could contain the Bobcat's offense.
The Bulldogs capitalized on more errors from the Bobcats and scored two more runs in the seventh. The Bulldogs went on to score one more run in the eighth inning and finished the game on top 12-6.
Game two:
The Bulldogs jumped to an early lead in game two, scoring three runs to take an early lead. Pokornowski singled to right field to set up a bases-load situation for Michael Gabbard who knocked a two RBI single into right field. Lewis notched their first run of the game in the second, bringing it to 3-1.
The Flyers would bring it within one run in the fourth and the score would remain constant until the Bulldogs came up to bat in the eighth. Pokornowski blasted another single to left field, kicking off the inning. Cole then doubled to center field scoring one for the Bulldogs. Gabbard also secured another RBI single in the eighth inning, bringing the score to 5-2.
The Bulldogs went on to score two more runs in the ninth and held the Flyers to two runs. Pokornowski and Wattermann shared the mound and combined for a total six strikeouts and only allowing two runs.
