BULLDOGS TAKE SPLIT WITH SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team picked up the split with Southwest Minnesota State in the double header on Wednesday evening.

For the first game of the series, the Bulldogs offense came to play. Tosten Mann put the Bulldogs on the board with a double to center field. Sam Tanner and Alex Wattermann also added to the Bulldog offense early in the first, to give the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Michael Gabbard continued the offensive attack with a three-run homer to left field. Tim Pokornowski also homered to left field for a two-run add on, which rounded out the top of the first with eight Bulldog Runs. The Mustangs were able to notch two runs in the first and one in the second to bring the score to 8-3 heading into the third inning.

Pokornowski got the inning started with a single RBI, and was immediately followed by a Jack Puder three-run homer to right field. Gabbard once again continued the offensive push with a grand slam to left field, which brought the score to 17-3. The score would remain stagnant until the seventh when Nathan Rosenberg would notch the RBI and score the last run of the game for the Bulldogs.

Pokornowksi also would notch the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. He allowed just seven hits through six innings with seven strikeouts. Wattermann came in to close on the mound for the Bulldogs holding the Mustangs to three runs and finalized the score at 18-6.

Game two started with the Bulldogs on top, but not with as much offensive action. Tosten Mann picked up his first RBI of the game to get the Bulldogs an early run in the top of the first. SMSU would go on to score three, keeping it a 3-1 ball game until the bottom of the second inning. There SMSU would get the jump on the Bulldogs, putting up nine runs on eight hits and extending their lead to 12-1.

The Bulldogs battled in the fourth to score four more runs thanks to Mann and Sam Tanner, who both picked up RBIs to make it 5-13. The Bulldogs struck again in the top of the fifth with a Tim Pokornowski homer to center field, scoring two. SMSU picked up two runs in the fifth as well, bringing the score to 7-13.

The Bulldogs worked to bring it within three in the sixth inning, but the Mustangs offense and defense overcame the Bulldogs and finalized the score 18-13.

The Bulldogs will be back in action in Duluth on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30 at Wade Stadium for a double header against St. Cloud State. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1:30 p.m. with the second game immediately following.
