BULLDOGS COLLECT 1-2 SPLIT WITH ST. CLOUD STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team picked up the 1-2 split against St. Cloud State in a three game series. Saturday, the Bulldogs collected an extra inning 7-6 win in game one, fell 9-14 in game two, and fell 8-4 in game three on Monday afternoon.

Game one on Saturday started with an early St. Cloud lead, notching two runs in the opening at-bats. The Bulldogs wouldn't be able to answer until the bottom of the second when Nathan Rosenburg hit a double down the left field line, scoring two runs for the Bulldogs and making the score an even 2-2.

The Huskies started the third period with a double down the center line, but the Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Tosten Mann singled to right center field and scored one, bringing it back up to an even 3-3. The Bulldogs would keep the score even until the fourth inning when Michael Gabbard hit a single home run and gave the Bulldogs the first lead of the day.

Sam Tanner would continue the Bulldogs success and homered to left field in the fifth inning, cutting the Huskies lead to two. The Bulldogs and Huskies would then go back and forth until the seventh inning when the Bulldogs tied it up 6-6, but fell short of the winning run, which pushed the game into extra innings. The Bulldogs would hold off the Huskies until the bottom of the ninth when Gabbard notched a walk-off single and scored Tanner.

Game two started off in favor of the Bulldogs. They scored an early run in the first with a Gabe Richardson single. The Huskies had a big answer to the Bulldogs early run and scored four runs in the top of the second and continued their rally until the third inning where they notched another run, and brought the score to 5-1. Gabe Richardson notched another RBI to score Tim Pokornowksi in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs notched two more runs in the fourth inning  with a Thomas Hansen single to right center.

The Score remained at 4-9, the Bulldogs trailing the Huskies until the bottom of the fifth when Alex Watermann blasted a grand slam to left field and cut the Huskies lead to one run. The Huskies answered with a five run inning and despite a seventh inning rally from the Bulldogs, would end game two 14-9.

Game three took place the next day and started in favor of the Huskies, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead. THe Bulldogs were able to cut that lead to one run in the third inning with Pokornowski and Richardson singles to bring in two runs.

The Huskies were able to collect another three runs before the Bulldogs were able to score again in the seventh inning. With another Richardson and Wattermann single, the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on a wild pitch and score another run to make the score 3-6. The Huskies notched two more runs in the ninth, and the Bulldogs one, finalizing the score at 4-8.

The Bulldogs will be back in action in Duluth at Wade Stadium for their final home games of the season on Tuesday, May 2 for a double header against Minnesota Crookston. First pitch on Tuesday  is set for 1:30 p.m. with the second game immediately following.
