High Scoring Soccer Season Opener Ends in Loss for Bulldogs, First Collegiate Goals for Eischens and Spaude

University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team opened its season against Northern Michigan University Thursday afternoon in Marquette, Mich. as part of a two game road trip. The teams traded goals, but the game ultimately ended in a 4-3 loss for the Bulldogs.

"I was proud of our effort, we never gave up, but we definitely have things we need to work on," said senior forward Jackie Jares. "We just need to grow, move on, and focus on Saturday."

The Bulldogs' season opener was the first since 2017 to feature three Bulldog goals (3-0 vs. Minnesota-Parkside).

It was also the first UMD game with three or more goals by the team since Oct. 2, 2022, when the team shutout Minnesota Crookston 4-0. The win over Crookston was one of only two performances with that many Bulldog goals last season.

NMU opened the scoring, with a goal from sophomore Megan Kirby just over eight minutes into the game.

UMD answered in turn with freshman Jessica Eischens scoring her first collegiate goal at 12:42 of the first half. Despite heavy coverage from two NMU defenders, Eischens secured a pass from Jares and kicked it in from close range.

The Wildcats gained back the lead on a strike from Molly Pistorius six minutes later. Pistorius scored another, assisted by Hannah Kastamo to bring their team ahead by two late in the half.

UMD was not to be deterred, with Alaina Spaude using the chaos in front of the goal to tap in the Bulldogs' second goal of the season and another collegiate first at 37:46.

The second half opened with a save behind the goaltender from Hallie Witte, stopping the ball from crossing the line and stopping a rush by the Wildcats.

A third goal from Pistorius extended the Wildcats' lead, only for Anna Tobias to pull UMD back within one at 64:29. Tobias scored off an arching kick from the deep left of the offensive zone, sending the ball into the top right of NMU's goal.

UMD continued their efforts to tie the game up, but were outshot 23 to 12 and couldn't convert any chances in the final minutes.

Eischens wasn't the only freshman who saw playing time in the match, with Amelia Pons, Madelynn Huynh, and Chloe Pallow all subbing in.

The Bulldogs play again on Thursday at 12 p.m. EDT/11 a.m. local time against Michigan Tech.
