Soccer Secures Season’s First Victory Thanks to Record-Breaking Consecutive Goals and Penalty Kicks

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team took the field this Sunday afternoon for what would become their first victory this season, kicking off at 1 p.m. versus Northern State University.

The Bulldogs staged an impressive second half comeback featuring two penalty kick goals, as well as record-breaking consecutive goals from Jackie Jares, to beat the Wolves 3-1.

A free kick just under 10 minutes into the game from Jares created a chance for Anna Tobias down low, but NSU's Alexus Townsend made the stop in net. UMD dominated the early chances.

However, five minutes later, the Wolves opened the scoring with a goal off a high shot from redshirt freshman Hannah Smith.

NSU took over momentum, Smith making a couple more runs at the goal which ended up wide or were stopped by UMD's defense.

At the half, the score stood at 1-0 in favor of the Wolves. The Bulldogs had not scored in the past 223:17 on the field, since Jares' penalty kick against Michigan Tech.

Four minutes into the second half, Tobias put an end to UMD's goal drought, sneaking the ball in the lower right corner on a penalty kick to tie the game.

The Bulldogs took over shooting opportunities in the second half, going from down a shot in the first half (3-4) to leading shots 5-1 halfway through the second (8-5 total).

Jares took a penalty kick at 76:37 and put the ball in the opposite corner Tobias did. Fifty three seconds later, Jares scored again on a breakaway, the Bulldogs first non-penalty kick goal since the 64:29 mark of the season's first game against Northern Michigan.

Jares' goals secured her the fastest consecutive goals in program history, a record previously held by Kaisa Ranki (1:07 vs. Southwest Minnesota St., Aug. 24, 2006).

UMD brought their weekend record up to an even 1-1-0 with this afternoon's 3-1 win over NSU.

The Bulldogs play again next weekend, starting Friday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. with a road rematch against St. Cloud State, followed by a home game against Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17.
