Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team hit the road once again to take on St. Cloud State University in the season's first conference matchup.
The teams most recently met on Friday, Sept. 8 at Malosky Stadium, when SCSU shut out UMD 2-0. Now battling for conference standings, the Bulldogs entered today's game hoping to use the momentum from last Sunday's win over Northern State.
Scoring opportunities were few and far between for the Bulldogs, however, as they narrowly avoided another shutout, sneaking in a late goal to bring the final score to 2-1.
UMD was unsuccessful in opening the scoring for the third game in a row. Huskies sophomore Ellie Primerano took advantage of a breakaway and brought her team up 1-0, just under nine minutes into the game.
After a quiet middle section of the half, SCSU was able to capitalize again 35 minutes in, on a shot from freshman Linsey Trapino. UMD entered the second half down by two, with one shot on goal.
At the 55 minute mark, a defensive scramble by the Huskies after a Bulldog corner kick led to a scoring opportunity for Malory Russ, but was ultimately stopped as SCSU regained control.
UMD got a handful of additional shots and offensive opportunities, but were still scoreless with five minutes left.
A late offensive push got the Bulldogs on the board, with a goal from Miriam Marsan that took advantage of netfront traffic. Marsan's goal was her first of the season, after tallying an assist against Northern Michigan.
UMD escaped another shutout from SCSU, but still left their first conference game with a 0-1-0 record (1-3-1 overall).
The Bulldogs play again on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Minnesota Crookston at Malosky Stadium.
