The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team took on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponent University of Minnesota Crookston this afternoon at Malosky Stadium.
The team was able to even their conference record to 1-1 with a 5-0 shutout win against UMC.
The Bulldogs dominated possession and chances all game. In the first half alone, UMD outshoot the Golden Eagles 22-0, Anna Tobias led the team with 5 shots (3 on goal).
Cambelle Christensen looked to convert after a UMD free kick thirty five minutes in, but hit the crossbar. Soon after the Bulldogs thought they had opened the scoring, but it was called offside.
Lauren Hansen made a similar play on a free kick from Jackie Jares with under a minute to go in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The score remained 0-0. The Bulldogs held possession for 33 minutes in the first half.
Tobias broke open the scoring early in the second half, scoring three goals in 1:08 to earn the fastest hat trick in NCAA DII Women's Soccer history, beating the previous record of 1:09 by Grand Valley State.
The previous fastest natural hat trick by a Bulldog was 5:00, scored by Erin Munkeby on Sept. 6, 1998 versus St. Scholastica. UMD's last hat trick was Sept. 15, 2013 by Dani Potter.
Tobias also beat Jares' recent team record for fastest consecutive goals in team history (53 seconds), scoring her first and second within 28 seconds.
The Bulldogs weren't done yet. Just under 65 minutes into the game, Jessica Eischens made contact with UMC's goaltender on a breakaway, but still managed to get the ball across the line. UMD went up 4-0.
The Bulldogs continued to overpower the Golden Eagles. Marsan added to the team's goal total with ten minutes left in the match and UMD held their five goal lead until the final buzzer.
Today marked UMD's first 5-0 win since Oct. 5, 2013 vs. Wayne State.
The Bulldogs play again next weekend at Malosky Stadium, at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22 versus Augustana and 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24 versus Wayne State for Alumni Day.
