Soccer Drops Home Opener 2-0 Against St. Cloud State, Focus Shifts to Sunday

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team took on St. Cloud State University for the first time this season in tonight's home opener.

For the second time in a row, the Huskies beat the Bulldogs 2-0 at Malosky Stadium. The teams last faced off on Oct. 27, 2022, when SCSU closed the door on UMD's postseason hopes.

The first half began with a battle of possession, UMD and SCSU traded the ball for short rushes.

Jennifer Norris made a solid save from close range, keeping the score 0-0 just over 29 minutes into the game. The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs 6-1 in the first half (5-0 SOG), with Freshman forward Jessica Eischens recorded UMD's singular shot.

Anna Tobias got the ball past the Huskies goaltender with twelve minutes left in the half, but there was no goal due to an offside call. The clock continued to count down and the score sheet stayed blank at halftime.

SCSU's scoring changes continued early in the second half. At 51:27, fifth year Jenna Dominguez secured the game's first lead, assisted by Ellie Primerano.

Despite multiple offensive rushes by Jackie Jares, the Bulldogs were unable to record another shot on goal.

At the other end, the Huskies thought they'd doubled their lead, but another offside call kept the game 1-0.

With twenty minutes to go in regulation, SCSU's Ariel Hawkey added a second goal and solidified the final score of tonight's matchup. Norris faced 11 shots on goal (14 total) from the Huskies.

The Bulldogs play again at home at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept 10. against Northern State University.
