Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Jenna VanSickle

Bulldogs Fall Behind Against Colorado College, Lose 4-1 After Three Unanswered Goals

In the second game of the series versus Colorado College, the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team fell 4-1. UMD tied the game early, but three unanswered CC goals decided the game.

It was an even first period, despite three power play opportunities for the Tigers. CC opened the scoring the first time they had the man advantage.

A successful second kill for UMD shifted the momentum. The Bulldogs sustained offensive possession until freshman Matthew Perkins jumped off the bench. The Tigers scrambled to reposition themselves defensively, but he caught the puck and skated clean down the middle to score.

The first call in the Bulldogs favor came at the very end of the first period. CC served the slashing penalty for the first two minutes after intermission.

UMD wasn't able to take advantage of the power play. A few minutes later, the Tigers crashed the net, regaining the lead with a backhanded shot.

The third period was quiet, until a string of late penalties were called on the Bulldogs. CC scored their second power play goal of the night on the first power play. They added an empty net goal and spent the last minute of play with a two-man advantage.

This is the first game between the programs to end in regulation this season. All three prior ended in overtime or the shootout (1-1-1).

With two games left in the regular season, UMD is locked in at seventh in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. In the NCHC Tournament Quarterfinals, the Bulldogs will play the second team in the standings. Currently, Denver holds that spot with 42 points, but both St. Cloud State (40) and CC (38) are close. DU and CC will close the season against each other.

SCSU will visit UMD for the final regular season series next weekend, Friday, March 8 at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday, March 9 at 6:07 p.m. The 2023-24 Senior Night Ceremony will take place prior to puck drop on Saturday.
