The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team locked in for an all out defensive head to head with the Michigan Tech Huskies for this afternoon's Alumni Day matchup, holding MTU scoreless throughout the first half before giving up the lone goal of the match in the second to fall to 0-2-0 on the 2024-25 season.
Â
First Half: UMD (0) - MTU (0)
Â
The physicality of the both teams highlighted the first half of today's NSIC vs. GLIAC matchup. A total of eight fouls, with five of those being assessed to the side of Michigan Tech, would compliment the efficiency of the defense's abilities to keep each other in their own zone for a majority of the half and keep the game scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
Â
Second Half: UMD (0) - MTU (0)
Â
The Huskies would break the scoreless game early in the second half, utilizing a throw-in near midfield to drive into UMD territory and sneak in the first goal of the match into the lower right corner of the goal at the 47:57 mark. While junior goalkeeper Kaycee Chavez would be able to tally on three more saves throughout the second half, the Bulldog offense would be unable to convert on various shots on goal that would bounce off the crossbar or posts and would close out their opening weekend with a 0-2 record.
Â
Players of the Match
Â
Junior midfielders Malory Russ and Miriam Marsan both played significant minutes in this afternoon's matchup. Marsan collected four shots and two shots on goal through 60 minutes of play, and Russ collected two shots and one shot on goal through 49 minutes of play. The pair teamed up to collect six and three of the Bulldog's nine total shots and five total shots on goal.
