Knapp Named NCHC Rookie of the Week

UMD Bulldogs "ALLETE" Moments: Competition
Throughout this year, UMD Athletics is partnering with Minnesota Power, ALLETE to highlight the Bulldogs accomplishments in the 3 C's: Classroom, Competition, Community.

University of Minnesota Duluth freshman goaltender Klayton Knapp was named the National College Hockey Conference's Rookie of the Week Monday after his between the pipes heroics in the Bulldogs weekend sweep of then No. 10 St. Cloud State University.

The Waterville, Ohio native earned both wins over the Huskies, the first back-to-back victories of his college career. Friday night, Knapp also recorded his first career collegiate shutout in a 24-save effort against St. Cloud St. The following evening, Knapp made 20 saves in UMD's 5-2 win over the Huskies, pushing his total save count on the weekend to 48 saves in the series. Overall, Knapp had a . 960 saves percentage on the weekend and a 1.00 goals against average, and he was the only goaltender with a shutout on the weekend in the NCHC.

Knapp is UMD's fifth NCHC weekly honoree and the third different rookie to land the first-year player of the week accolade. Previously both Max Plante and Jayson Shaugabay picked up the honor, while freshman goaltender Adam Gajan also was named the Goaltender of the Week (Nov. 18), and Dominic James was twice the NCHC Forward of the Week this season.

Knapp, who has now won three of the last five games he's started in goal, will travel to Colorado College this week to face the Tigers on the road. Friday night's puck is set to drop at 9:00 p.m. CT, while Saturday will get underway at 8:00 p.m  CT.
