The University of Minnesota Duluth indoor track and field teams had a weekend full of tough competition and plenty of PRs. On Friday, Jan. 24th the Bulldog distance squad raced at the St. Olaf Invite 5k in Northfield, Minn., and on Saturday, Jan. 25th, the rest of the team traveled to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on the Jack Johnson Classic.
Fifth-year Owen Dickenson started things off in strong force on the men's side, with a first place finish and monster PR (4:15.88) in the mile. Sophomore Brady Johnson added another first place finish in the 200m, with a time of 22.61. Junior teammate Cole Brisbois finished right on his heels to claim second in a time of 22.71.
For the women, Junior Kate Fitzgerald led the way with a first place finish in the 200m (25.93). Sophomore Ellie Hanowski also ran herself to the top of the podium in the 800m with a time of 2:19.70. Fellow sophomore Rachel Ulrich claimed second place in the same race (2:20.12).
Fifth year Megan Gilles snagged a runner up finish in the women's 60m hurdles (9.05), and freshmen Noah Rodenwald and Jake Heimkes both claimed seconds in the men's pole vault (4.26m), and men's 600m (1:26.85), respectively.
Both Bulldog 4x400m teams also saw runner up finishes on the day. The women's team consisting of Fitzgerald, Fitzpatrick, Mathews, and Burke had a time of 4:09.39, and the men's squad of Johnson, Olson, Unger, and Kehr completed their race in a time of 3:26.61.
"We had a fantastic weekend with strong performances across the board," said head coach Karly Brautigam. "Our student athletes stepped up to the challenge and competed very well. We're excited about our conference positioning across different event areas and the student athletes are motivated to continue to build momentum throughout the next few weeks."
