The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team found out why the No. 2 team in the country is Minnesota State University, Mankato Friday afternoon at the Maverick Soccer Complex in Mankato, Minn., suffering a 3-0 loss in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
After a scoreless first half where the Mavericks edged the Bulldogs 7-4 in shots, MSU struck in the 62nd minute and again at the 71:14 mark. MSU added its final score in the 81st minute, all but extinguishing any UMD comeback thought.
Overall, the Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs 18-8 and 9-2 on goal. MSU also had a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Senior UMD goalkeeper
Kaycee Chavez had six saves, while her counterpart in the MSU goal, Lauren McAlpine had just two for the undefeated Mavericks who improve to 9-0-1 and 7-0-0 in the NSIC.
The Bulldogs (3-4-3, 2-3-2) will head to St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. for a Sunday conference showdown. The game is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
