The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team earned its third James S. Malosky Stadium victory of the season off the efforts of
Miriam Marsan's first career hat trick in a 4-1 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead Friday evening.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with Marsan scoring two goals, with the first coming 18 minutes in with help from
Kaitlyn Beavers and
Savannah Gieseke. The next goal came off a long midfield pass by Beavers to Marsan 14 minutes later, with both defenses settling in after for the final 13 minutes of the half for a 2-0 Bulldog advantage into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, it only took over a minute for
Elaina Shromoff to send a goal past a diving Quin Carter in goal to mark a 3-0 UMD lead. The Dragons would find room to break the shutout after a goal from Ana Cecilia Walker with 16:57 remaining to cut the Bulldog lead to two. The final Bulldog goal came off a penalty kick with over five minutes remaining by Marsan to force a 4-1 final score and her first career hat trick.
The Bulldog defense kept the Dragons scoreless for 73 minutes straight. This includes only allowing two shots on goal, with Senior goalkeeper
Kaycee Chavez earning one save, improving to a 4-5-2 overall record. The Bulldog offense sent 17 shots at the net, forcing 13 saves from the MSUM goalkeeper and staggered the Dragon defense with 10 corner kicks to their offense's three.
UMD now has a 25-3-2 overall record over the Dragons and is now unbeaten in the last 14 matchups.
The Bulldogs (4-5-3, 3-4-2) head back on the road to face the University of Minnesota Crookston Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the Minnesota Crookston Soccer Field.
