On Dec. 7, the University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team took Arizona State University to overtime before suffering a 3-2 loss with 19 seconds left in the extra frame. Friday night, at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn., the Bulldogs reversed their fate against the No. 10 Sun Devils with a goal 2:37 into overtime to grab the National Collegiate Hockey Conference win.
Â
"It was huge, you know, we went to overtime with them in their barn and thought we should have come out with a win there," said UMD captain Dominic James. "To finish the job, as we say, there are no moral victories in this league, to really get the job done and succeed here felt really good."
Â
UMD's power play was once again clicking Friday night, and it was activated with a goal by Dominic James 13:27 into the first period for the early Bulldog lead. James' goal, his first in seven games, snapped from the right circle, his 11th of the season.
Â
The Sun Devils responded with a power play tally of their own from Artern Shlaine 39 seconds later to pull ASU even, a score that would hold through the rest of the opening frame.
Â
ASU went ahead 2-1 4:55 into the second period when Lukas Sillinger somehow pushed the puck through the UMD goaltender Klayton Knapp's pads. But UMD responded again with another power play goal, this time from Callum Arnott. After Ty Hanson's hit traffic in the front of the net, Arnott corralled it and popped it at 7:07 to knot the game up at 2-2.
Â
A scoreless third period led to overtime, and UMD jumped all over the extra time opportunity, including a puck off the pipe just 15 seconds in. The Bulldogs finally got their redemption at the 2:37 mark when James carried the puck into the ASU zone, cycled and played the to Aaron Pionk, whose sharp cut in the slot to his left froze the Sun Devil defender just long enough to bury the puck far post for the game-winner.
Â
"I saw Dom grab it, and I saw how much foot speed he had, " said Pionk when asked about his game-winning goal. "I looked at their D and they were pretty pushed back, and when you see a guy like that with that much speed, you're kind of hoping for it. So they retreated pretty deep and I saw him kind of make that turn up, and that was my cue to pull down through there and he made that pass and I kind of did whatever I had to do to get to the middle. It worked and I turned and trusted my shot and it went in."
Â
UMD outshot ASU 26-25 and 3-2 in overtime, and got 23 saves from Klayton Knapp in his sixth win of the season. The Bulldogs were 2-of-3 on their power play, while the Sun Devils went 1-of-1. Sun Devil goaltender Luke Pavicich also made 23 stops for ASU, who falls to 17-11-1 and 12-7-0 in league play.
Â
The Bulldogs (11-15-1. 7-10-0) will do it all over again tomorrow night in game two scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
