The University of Minnesota Duluth defeated Purdue University Northwest and Hillsdale College on the second day of the Lewis Dome Invitational on Friday in Rosemount, Ill. The Bulldogs (9-3), winners of three straight and five of the last six, outlasted the Pride 10-8 in the afternoon barn burner then knocked off the Chargers 7-4 in the night cap.
Coming into the weekend in the top-50 in the nation in run production, the Bulldogs showcased their offensive powerhouse as they bombarded opposing pitching to the tune of 17 runs on 15 hits. The 17 runs was the most during a double header this season, tying the 17 total runs they placed on the season opener.
UMD benefited off four Pride errors including a costly three-run error that cleared the bases in the first inning. Scoring in five of the seven innings, the Bulldogs never carried more than a three run lead as Purdue Northwest (1-3) cut the lead in the bottom half of the inning on four of those five scoring outings including a four-run third inning that closed the UMD lead to 7-6 heading to the fourth. Later, the Bulldogs added two insurance runs to extend the gap to three in the final frame and held off another rally from the Pride to seal the victory.
UMD scored double digit runs for the third time this season off just six hits and eight walks, the fifth game this season the offense has been given at least seven free passes to first base. Senior infielder
Nicole Schmitt and freshman infielder
Taryn Christopher each led the Bulldogs with a pair of RBIs in the win as eight different Bulldogs came around to score a run in the contest. Junior catcher
Kendal Jenkins had a team-high two of the five UMD stolen bases as she and sophomore infielder
Khendal Johnson each scored twice, to lead the squad.
Junior pitcher
Allyssa Williams was overshadowed by the offensive production but she got the much needed run support to lock down the victory in the circle against Hillsdale (5-5) The Bulldogs accounted for all seven runs in the second and third innings. Williams carried that lead the entire distance throwing a complete game while striking out a career high 11.
Sophomore
Serena Timmer had a team-high three RBI against the Chargers. The Appleton, Wis., native put UMD on the board first with a two-run double in the left center gap. She would tack on her last RBI in the third as she singled in the same gap to easily score Johnson, who scored twice again. Also in the third, junior outfielder
Morgan McMillan and Schmitt each compiled RBI singles and Jenkins looped a two-run double to right field to complete the five-run third inning.
Timmer and sophomore outfielder
Noelle Krumrie each registered two hits while Krumrie gathered her first stolen base of the season.
The Bulldogs cap off the weekend tomorrow with two more games, beginning with the University of Wisconsin Parkside at 6:00 p.m. then immediately taking on Wayne State University (Mich.) at 8:00 p.m.
