UMD Baseball Splits with SMSU in Opening Day Doubleheader

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team opened up their 2025 season today with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader in Iowa, falling in game one 1-0  before rallying back to take game two 7-5 against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on opening day.

 

Game One: UMD (0) - SMSU (1)

 

A defensive clinic put on by both the Bulldogs and the Mustangs to open the season would only see three hits between the two teams throughout the first five innings. Bulldog starter Henry Wilkinson would contribute to the low score count, collecting four strikeouts through five and two thirds innings pitched in his first start of the season. The Mustangs would break open the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, building a 1-0 lead that would hold until the end of the seven inning tilt.

 

Game Two: UMD (7) - SMSU (5)

 

The Bulldogs got to work early on the base paths in the second game of the day after a wild pitch moved runners on first and second forward into scoring position. Joey Flom would go on to drive in the Bulldogs' first run of the season with a towering sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Kade Peloquin to build a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs responded in the bottom of the third with their second solo home run of the day to even out the score line at 1-1.

 

An opening single and walk in the top of the fourth brought Troy Lynch to the plate, who collected a single of his own to score Nathan Rosenberg from second base to add another run to the board. The rally continued for the Bulldogs as Flom would knock a double down the right field line for another RBI and put Lynch on third. With runners in scoring position, Ethan Pettis poked a single of his own up the middle to add another two runs to the score before the end of the inning and build the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead.

 

SMSU took their chance to respond in the bottom of the fifth by scoring from second on a throwing error, and again in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly out to center field to shrink the gap down to 5-3. A pair of RBI hits for the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh tied things up 5-5 .

 

In the top of the ninth, a triple from Thomas Hanson and a subsequent throwing error from the Mustangs pushed the Bulldogs back in the lead 7-5. That score would hold out until the end of the game for UMD to collect their first win of the season and move to a 1-1 record. 

 

Looking Ahead

 

Bulldog baseball is back in action tomorrow against the Mustangs for their second doubleheader of the season. First pitch is currently scheduled for 11:30 AM.
