UMD Baseball Takes Game One in Day Two Doubleheader Split with SMSU

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team closed out their second day in Iowa this afternoon, taking game one in their doubleheader split against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs to move to 2-2 on the season.

Game One: UMD (2) - SMSU (1)

Brayden Buttweiler opened on the mound for the Bulldogs this afternoon, collecting three strikeouts to contribute to a scoreless two innings to open the day. UMD would tack on the first run of the afternoon, cashing in on a Nathan Rosenberg single down the left field line to score Michael Gabbard from third base. Another scoreless fourth and fifth inning broke up the action until a Joey Flom double would find the gap in right field to score Kade Peloquin from second. The Mustangs went on to respond in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single of their own, but it proved to be too little too late as the Bulldogs closed out game one.

Game Two: UMD (9) - SMSU (13)

SMSU broke open the scoring early in game two, tallying a grand slam in the first inning to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Rosenberg continued his strong day of offense with a solo home run in the second. The momentum continued as Troy Lynch would reach on single around move around the horn on a pair of wild pitches before an SMSU balk would allow him to score. Flom went on to tap another RBI hit before the end of the inning, cutting down the deficit to 4-3 to end the top of the second. However, a Mustang solo home run would increase that deficit yet again before the end of the inning.

A scoreless third inning broke up the action before SMSU would tack on seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of Garrett Stauffacher solo home runs in the sixth and ninth innings would not be enough as the Bulldogs would fall 13-9 to end the series in Iowa 2-2 on the season..

Looking Ahead

Bulldog baseball will look to play out their postponed four game series with the University of Sioux Falls Cougars before leaving for their annual appearance in the RussMatt Central Florida Invite. Location and times for the postponed games have yet to be determined.
