Lights Out! Dawyduk First Career Blast Takes Center Stage in Day 3 Split

A monster sixth inning capped off by the first collegiate home run by freshman Taylor Dawyduk was the highlight of Monday's late-night double dip for the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Bulldogs battled adjusted game times due to weather, extremely windy conditions and even a slight power outage of the lights at the Legends Way Ballpark in Clermont, Fla., on the way to a split on the third day of THE Spring Games.

Dawyduk capped the opening game off with a bang -- literally -- as she crushed a 3-1 pitch straight off the scoreboard in right field to walk off Bentley University 11-1 in sixth innings. UMD attempted to grab the double header sweep but were edged 4-0 by Northwood University.

The Bulldogs (18-7) are now 3-3 at THE Spring Games with two games remaining on Thursday to conclude non-conference action.

In a tight 2-1 ball game against Bentley, play was suspended with one out in the fifth with the lights suddenly going dark. Once the lights were restored on the playing surface, it also ignited the UMD bats. The Bulldogs struck once in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 3-1 then the bats got hot in the final inning of play.

UMD erupted for eight runs on six hits in the sixth-inning offensive showcase.

Sophomore outfielder Emma Ambroz and freshman infielder Taryn Christopher, and newly-minted Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week Morgan McMillan each had RBI singles early in the frame. Junior catcher Kendal Jenkins tacked on a three-bagger, her first of the year and third of her career, to add on to the lead. Senior infielder Nicole Schmitt knocked her in on a base knock to center to push UMD up 8-1.

Then head coach Nat Wagner reached for his lineup sheet and brought in Dawyduk off the bench to pinch hit with the game-winning mercy-rule run standing 60 feet away. Wagner entrusted the freshman from Winnipeg, Manitoba to score Schmitt from third.

She did that and more.

Dawyduk became the fourth Bulldog this season to mash her first collegiate homer as she tattooed the ball and left a dent on the scoreboard.

Dawyduk had a game-high 3 RBI and three other Bulldogs -- Jenkins, Christopher and Schmitt -- each drove in two runs. That same trio also compiled two hits a piece in the victory over the Falcons (2-2). Sophomore pitcher Maddy Walsh notched her fourth consecutive win extending her unblemished record to 4-0 on the season. Walsh went five and two-third innings and struck out three. Senior pitcher Allison Luoma racked up her second save of the year. Luoma pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth, needing five pitches to strike out the lone batter she faced to silence the threat.

The Timberwolves (8-4) became the fourth team to stifle and shutout the Bulldogs. UMD gathered four hits, three coming in the first two innings, and had six walks but couldn't sew anything together. The ball was being driven around the park as the two clubs combined for seven line outs which kept the two teams scoreless through the first three innings. Northwoods punched through with two in the fourth and two more in the fifth as the pitching duo of Brynn Polega and Brittani Mutter secured the win.

The Bulldogs will have two days off before returning for one last double header in Florida on Thursday. UMD will conclude its non-conference slate with Saint Martin's University and Purdue University Northwest. The game against Saints starts at 9:00 a.m and the following game against the Pride begins at 1:45 p.m.
