Good morning. And goodnight.
Needing a quick turnaround, the University of Minnesota Duluth showed a gritty resilience with three matches within a 24-hour time span. The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 on the season with a pair of victories over Oglethorpe University and Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. The Bulldogs shutout the Stormy Petrels 7-0 at the United States Tennis Association National Campus in the morning session before returning later under the night sky to lay the beatdown on Battling Bishops 5-2 at the Fort Gatlin Tennis Center.
In all, UMD won 10 of the 12 single matches and went undefeated in doubles action on Tuesday.
It was a highly successful start to the day with all nine matches going in favor of the Bulldogs.
On the singles side of the card, No. 1 senior
Luana da Silva defeated Maddie Nolen 6-1, 6-3. No. 2 junior
Carly Chaney defeated Taylor Glover 6-1, 6-0 for her first win of the season. No. 3 freshman
Isabelle Simon won 6-0, 6-1 over Grace Elsevier. No. 4 sophomore
Courtney Eppen nabbed her second straight singles win, taking down Karina Lopez. The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches went 6-0, 6-0 with junior
Lilly Nelson beating Apsana Rai and junior
Brynne Folden blanking Abigail Hudson.
In doubles, da Silva and Eppen paired up for the first time all season to take a 6-1 decision. It was da Silva's first win in doubles action as a Bulldog. Simon and freshman
Sydney Friedrich nabbed a perfect 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot, and the tag team of Chaney and senior
Olivia Honsey took a 6-0 win in the final doubles pairing. Honsey picked up her first doubles win in her only attempt this spring.
UMD continued on, diabolically picking apart Ohio Wesleyan in the Bulldogs' second match of the day. It opened with taking all three double matches for the opening point and proceeded to win the first three singles matches as they concluded to secure the match.
With the win in hand, attention turned to the No. 2 singles match as Chaney made a ferocious comeback for the cherry on top. Her spirited effort forced a third set, to which Chaney won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Lily Hershey.
No. 3 Friedrich clinched her second singles victory of the year, toppling Riley Brokaw 6-4, 6-4. No. 5 Honsey eased past Evaleigh Garnett 6-2, 6-0, and No. 6 Eppen overpowered Maisie Dugger 6-4, 6-3. Eppen pushed her singles mark to 3-0 this spring, joining fellow freshman teammate
Olivia Gorton with the most singles wins without a loss.
Similar to the morning, the No. 1 duo of da Silva and Eppen won again, this time 6-3. Simon and Friedrich did their part at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 victory, and Folden and Nelson swept the board, winning 6-2 in the No. 3 slot.
The Bulldog tennis team will enjoy a day off in the sun before returning to action on Thursday, March 13 with showdowns against Connecticut College and Grinnell College.
