Johnson's Two-Hit Performance Earns Split Against Wayne State

After dropping the opener, sophomore infielder Khendal Johnson notched a pair of hits and tallied a pair of RBI in the second game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader to aid the University of Minnesota Duluth to a split against Wayne State College Friday.

The Bulldogs (23-11, 3-3 NSIC) corralled a 5-2 over the Wildcats (18-12, 3-3 NSIC) after being shut out 2-0 in game one. Johnson went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI including her seventh double of the season in the win. She also had one of the four UMD hits in game one.

Junior righty Allyssa Williams also did her part in the Bulldog win. Williams secured her team-leading ninth victory. The Yuba City, Calif., native tossed her sixth complete game allowing four hits and two walks in her outing. She fanned eight Wildcats for her third straight win in the last three starts.

The Bulldogs posted six walks and six stolen bases in the contest. The six stolen bases matched a season best by UMD, which it has done on two other occasions. Junior catcher Kendal Jenkins had two of the six swipes as she now has 15 of her 17 career stolen bases this season.

Johnson gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first on her RBI double in the left center gap. Wayne State knotted the score 2-2 but the St. Michael, Minn., native knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the third on a solid base hit to left center scoring sophomore infielder Serena Timmer, who led off the inning with a hit by pitch.

Johnson has seven RBI in her last six games including an RBI in four straight.

UMD added to the lead in the fourth and Jenkins gave the Bulldogs a three-run cushion on her RBI single in the final frame as Williams holstered the Wildcats as she allowed no hits in the final five innings and only allowed one base runner during that span.

In the 2-0 Wildcat victory, pitcher Kennadi Borngrebe grabbed her 10th win of the year, firing a complete game four hitter. She kept the Bulldog bats guessing as she registered seven strikeouts and held UMD without a hit until the fifth inning.

Wayne State broke open the scoring on a single in the second then added an insurance solo home run in the fourth as the Wildcats only mustered five hits of their own in a defensive battle.

Junior outfielder Morgan McMillan, sophomore outfielder Emma Ambroz, freshman infielder Taryn Christopher each gathered hits alongside Johnson.

UMD gets its first crack at a ranked opponent this season as it squares off against No. 10 Augustana University tomorrow in Sioux Falls, S.D. First pitch of the showdown with the Vikings begins at 12:00 p.m.
