Bulldogs Fall Twice in Sunday Twinbill

The University of Findlay and Hillsdale College managed to become one of few select softball clubs to hand the University of Minnesota Duluth a loss this season. Riding a six-game winning streak, the Bulldogs hit a road bump Tuesday at the Legend Ways Ballpark in Clermont, Fla., with consecutive losses for the first time all season 24 games in.

The Oilers narrowly took an extra-inning 5-4 nail-biter victory in the opener to snap the longest winning streak of the year. Then, the Chargers extracted revenge from a loss earlier this spring by the Bulldogs, upending the maroon-and-gold 6-4 in a tightly-contested game two.

The Findlay pitching duo of Alexys Antal and Kayla Dykin held the UMD bats in check after a rough first inning where UMD scored three runs in the opening frame. The Bulldogs posted three hits and three walks in the inning and almost had more as they left the bases juiced. Junior catcher Kendal Jenkins gave UMD a 1-0 lead, beating out a sacrifice squeeze on a perfectly executed bunt. Sophomore utility player Serena Timmer extended the lead to 3-0 on a double to straight away center.

From there the bats were held in check. The Oilers (11-3) crawled back in the game with a three-run fifth inning to eventually push the game to extras. After a scoreless eighth inning, FIndlay, who also beat Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Winona State University today, crossed home plate twice to take a 5-3 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore outfielder Sierra Thomas had an RBI groundout to score freshman infielder Taryn Christopher to cut the lead to 5-4. The Bulldogs couldn't extend the game with any other base runners for the potential inning extender.

Christopher had an RBI single in the top of the second to give UMD a 1-0 lead over Hillsdale. The Chargers (8-7) homered in the bottom half to square things at 1-1 and took the lead in the third. A base running gaff by Hillsdale ended the threat as one of the runners overtook another runner crossing home plate first in a rundown at home.

The Bulldogs turned that mistake and profited the following inning. Sophomore infielder Khendal Johnson ripped a shot off the fence to dead center. Her RBI double tied the contest and junior outfielder Morgan McMillan showed that hussle and not giving up on a routine ground ball pays off. She beat the throw to first with two outs and the lackadaisical defense allowed Christopher and Johnson to score.

Normally good at holding leads, UMD could not finish the job. HIllsdale charged ahead and rear-ended the Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth. Holding a 4-3 lead, Hillsdale pounded out three timely hits and a walk to grab on to a 6-4 lead.

The Bulldogs had a response of their own but fell one key hit short. Johnson had an opportunity with two down and the bases loaded. The St. Michael, Minn., native provided all the theatrics as she nearly did tie the game but her deep fly ball was caught in the gap on an all-out sprint to the deepest part of the outfielder to save the match for the Chargers.

UMD will play a pair of games Monday then have the next two days off to enjoy The Sunshine State. The Bulldogs square off against Bentley University and Northwood University tomorrow. Both game times are yet to be determined with rain expected in the morning. Updated game times will be listed on the schedule page.
