Bulldogs Collect Their Second Shutout of the Season in Game Two Victory, UMD Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Northern State

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team opened up their three game road trip in South Dakota against the Northern State University Wolves this afternoon, taking the shutout victory in game two for the doubleheader split at Fossum Field.

 

Game One: UMD (5) - NSU (6)

 

The Bulldogs were first on the scoreboard to open up the afternoon, putting two runners in scoring position early and then capitalizing on a RBI grounder from Troy Lynch to gain a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. 

 

A few scoreless half innings broke up the action before the Wolves got their chance to respond offensively in the bottom of the third, loading the bases for an RBI base hit before a grand slam over the right field wall by Nick Friedges to push the Wolves ahead 5-1.

 

UMD got their scoring back in action in the top of the sixth, loading the bases for a Nick Thompson triple to add three runs on the board and tying up the game at 5-5 on an Ethan Pettis RBI grounder.

 

A two out RBI base hit for the Wolves in the top of the seventh moved them ahead before preventing the Bulldogs from scoring in the bottom of the inning, handing UMD the 6-5 loss in game one.

 

Game Two: UMD (11) - NSU (0)

 

Scoring was all Bulldogs early in game two, scoring the first run of the game on a bases loaded error from the Wolves in the top of the first.

 

Things picked up right where they left off in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Kade Peloquin, giving UMD the 2-0 lead about halfway through the contest.

 

An RBI base hit from Lynch and a two RBI triple from Peloquin added another three runs on the board for the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth, with NSU still scoreless by the end of the inning.

 

The bats continued firing in the top of the sixth with a bases loaded grounder from Gabe Richardson and an RBI double from Lynch adding two runs before a two run homer from Nathan Rosenberg concluded a four run inning for UMD.

 

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice to end the game early, closing out the double header with the 11-0 win.

 

Looking Ahead

 

Bulldog baseball (15-18, 11-13 NSIC) closes out the series with a nine inning game against Northern State tomorrow afternoon. First pitch against the Wolves is currently set for 12:00 PM.
